Kundalini Reiki: Its Meaning and Benefits

Kundalini is one of the greatest energies. The whole body of the seeker starts glowing because of the rising of the Kundalini. Because of that, unwanted impurities in the body disappear. The body of the seeker suddenly looks very proportionate and the eyes look bright and attractive and the eyeballs glow.’
—Gyaneshwari, 1275 AD, Chapter VI of Gyaneshwari.

‘(Kundalini means) She who is hidden … (she) is the dormant goddess in every human being’s body … and can only be awakened if she travels up along the spine’

What Does ‘Kundalini’ Mean?

In Sanskrit kundal means coiled up and refers to the primordial energy that lies dormant in every human body. Like a snake, this energy is present at the base of the spine in a bone called the coccyx in three and a half coils. The location of the energy is important as many cultures consider this to be sacred and the ultimate seat of power. The coccyx is also the bone which is the last to be burnt, thereby lending itself to many mystic interpretations. Even today its significance is widely known and many alternative healing practices consider this to be supreme among all techniques.

How Kundalini Reiki Came Into Being

The all-encompassing Kundalini in its essence is there to nourish us. This is a force that needs to be awakened and like other Reiki techniques this, too, invigorates the body. This technique is supposed to have come into being due to the result of a holy communion between Master Ole Gabrielsen, a meditation master, and Kuthumi, one of the members of the Spiritual Hierarchy better known as a Mahatma. According to Kuthumi, the purpose of the Kundalini activation was to attune the individual to a greater more deep level of consciousness making love, compassion, and peace an immediate possibility.

Awakening the Kundalini

The root chakra is the entry point of this energy into our body. Located near the coccyx, this is the energy centre with which the Kundalini force makes its first contact. Also known as the Kundalini Fire this energy is unidirectional and while it runs throughout the body, it only travels in an upward movement and exits from the Crown Charka. Imagine a huge gush of energy sweeping through your body and rising up. In my experience a Kundalini awakening has seldom been a quiet experience. True to its serpentine quality, the undulating force often leaves people experiencing intense involuntary jerking movements accompanied with visions, sights, past-life recollections as the force rises and makes contact with the other chakras.

Irrespective of our beliefs, culture, or background, the Kundalini is there in each one of us. At its awakening, the purpose of the Kundalini is to establish a vertical connection with the different chakras in order to free or open up small energy pockets. It is also a purge; with this force the body flushes out its negative impulses and experiences a new, intense rush of purpose, joy, love, compassion, and purity to list a few.

While the chakras cleanse the energy channels through which life moves, the Kundalini enlivens everything it touches. At the time of its awakening, with additional Reiki energy being administered, the process of attaining enhanced personal development becomes faster.

How it benefits you!

Before I talk about its benefits, it would like to stress on how the Kundalini alone enhances the spinning and activation of the chakras thus enabling a wide array of sensations. From the root to the crown, upon stimulation the Kundalini energy manifests into various frequencies that correspond to the different chakras.

Among other things, Kundalini Reiki is beneficial for those who have had an awakening without their knowledge as this, too, can happen. Mostly in such cases people experience erratic behaviour and sometimes even bouts of illness. While the effects are not always negative, because of the intensity of the rising its repercussions are varied. Administering Reiki to these people enables a sense of calm that brings with it a higher level of consciousness and universal solidarity.

The overarching purpose of Kundalini Reiki is to create the capacity to self-heal which is why it moves upwards aligning the chakras which together produce a favourable frequency. The idea is to alleviate one’s energy starting from the Root Chakra all the way up to the Crown Chakra. Few of the benefits that have been confirmed are: deep relaxation, relief from stress, pain, and insomnia, and a sense of peace and calm. It also provides better immunity, good health, and vitality. By no means a substitute for medicine, awakening this force can bring about faster recovery and can be a great way of regaining one’s health. Additionally, those who seek to understand their purpose in life or wish to develop their consciousness also benefit from Kundalini Reiki. As the Kundalini Fire is channelled from the healer, healing at all levels—spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical—takes place.

While there are many interpretations regarding the meaning of the medical symbol—two snakes coiled around a staff—one of the interpretations is that the snakes represent the Kundalini force rising upwards in a balanced harmony. Sometimes, especially in this case, it is not necessary to know which of these is correct. The fact that so many theories abound is proof enough of its mystical quality. Such is the case with the Kundalini Fire as well. The Kundalini is always available and similar to the cleansing force of Reiki, knows where to go and what to do.
